State Criminal Searches

State criminal history is searched for both felony and misdemeanor convictions and pending cases for a minimum of seven years. The availability of extended search periods varies by jurisdiction. State criminal history searches encompass all counties within a particular state. Not every state has regulated processes that enable it to offer and maintain a state records repository. Other states have record repositories, but they are unregulated and poorly maintained. Unfortunately, Validity has found that only a handful of states have regulated, well-maintained repositories.

These states are:

  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Hawaii
  • Missouri
  • New York
  • North Carolina

Criminal record searches in states not listed above are conducted at the county level.
